Anorectal Abscess Drainage
ANORECTAL ABSCESS DRAINAGE

Indication: Perianal or ischiorectal abscess. Surgical drainage is the definitive treatment. Delay risks extension to adjacent fascial spaces.

Patient Position: Lithotomy or left lateral.

Anaesthesia: General, spinal, or local (for superficial perianal abscess).

Procedure:
1. Examination under anaesthesia. Abscess confirmed — site: perianal / ischiorectal / intersphincteric / supralevator / horseshoe. Fluctuance and extent assessed.
2. Incision made as close to the anal verge as possible (to minimise potential fistula tract length).
