PROCTOCOLECTOMY WITH ILEOANAL POUCH ANASTOMOSIS (IPAA)

Indication: Ulcerative colitis (definitive curative operation). Also for familial adenomatous polyposis (FAP). Removes entire colon and rectum; constructs ileal J-pouch anastomosed to the anal canal, preserving continence and avoiding permanent ileostomy.

Patient Position: Lloyd-Davies.

Anaesthesia: General.

Prophylactic Antibiotics: Per protocol.

Procedure (Two- or Three-Stage):

Stage 1 — Proctocolectomy and Pouch Construction:
1. Midline laparotomy (or laparoscopic approach). Complete mobilisation of the entire colon from caecum to rectosigmoid.
