WIDE LOCAL EXCISION (LUMPECTOMY) — WIRE-GUIDED

Indication: Impalpable breast lesion (screen-detected carcinoma or suspicious microcalcifications) requiring excision with radiological localisation using a hookwire placed by radiology.

Patient Position: Supine, arm extended.

Anaesthesia: General.

Pre-operative: Hookwire placed by radiology under ultrasound or stereotactic guidance on the day of surgery. Wire tip positioned within or immediately adjacent to the lesion. Specimen radiography suite available intra-operatively.

Procedure:
1. Wire entry site identified. Incision planned to allow excision of the target lesion without unnecessarily long wire track excision.
